A network of forest plots Pooling data from around the globe

Share:
Researchers around the world have meticulously recorded tree characteristics – height, diameter, species, soil type and more – on individual forest plots.

Alone, these data provide useful local insights but combined, powerful global patterns can emerge.

CIFOR is collaborating with numerous organizations, institutions and universities in pooling tree inventories into one enormous data set. Analyses have so far revealed relationships that could influence global decisions and predictions, from where to focus biodiversity conservation to how climate change will affect forest biomass storage.

This year:

  • 50 plots in Asia have been added to the network.
  • 55 plots in Central Africa have been re-assessed.
